Introductions and perspectives

Organisers Jake Roberts and Christer Lindström and the motor
of the Uppsala Podcar City 1 Event, Magnus Hunhammar, got the
ball rolling...

Mayor Carolyn Peterson,
Ithaca welcomed everyone
and told about the impressing
endevours of the Ithaca
community to reach ecological
goals and sustainability.

A Video Message was shown
from Debbie Cook, Mayor
of Huntington Beach and
candidate for US Congress (D).
She expressed her strong interest
in the issue and wished the event
good luck.

Gay Nicholson, CEO Sustainable Tompkins presented an interesting
holistic perspective on the process of changing paradigms. The best
way of bringing about such a change is not by focusing at numbers
and details, but at the fundamental attitudes.

Local experience

Hans Lindqvist
, the chairman
of the network for podcars in
municipalities - KOMPASS- made
a forceful plea for action.
See pdf of presentation

He told of the rapidly growing network and the enthusiastic
interest for podcars and invited representatives from other countries
to enter the network.

Let us unite Swedish enthusiasm and american "doism"!,
he concluded.

Time for Gus Ayer,
Fountain Valley
to give a South California
Perspective. He widened
the horizon with some
very wise reflections
on the podcar issue.

He used a big brush and painted a grand scenario what
is ahead and what has to be done.

Realism

Bo Olsson (left), Swedish Rail, focused on train development
but saw podcars as strong supplement and that the two modes of
transport could enforce one another.

Robbert Lohmann
(right), 2Getthere, Netherlands, presented
some invaluable experiences to remember when the euphoria
about podcars is expressed. He can tell about problems and
easily neglected aspects after a long trial and error project in
Amsterdam Shiphol Airport.

After all this wisdom and realism there was time for some...

Innovative perspectives

Crista Lopes
UCI, presented
The Encitra Virtual City Initiative.
Christa has developed tools
within the virtual environment
of 2nd Life, that can be
used for visualising podcar
solutions.
To some (so far), this project
seems to have a huge potential.

Crista showed how to move around in 2nd life (left) and her legendary performance
(as her 2nd Life "avatar" Diva Canto) with a podcar of SkyTran model (middle) and
how podcar tracks can be implemented in the 3-dimensional environment (right).

Design for the Podcar City

Another innovative perspective was opened up during the 1st days´
final discussion (led by David Muyres) with some of the lecturers from
the day at the podium.

It was put forward by Geoff Wardle (2nd from the right) and gave a
strong input regarding the whole planning process, the visual impact
of the podcar systems and the integration of all aspects of architecture,
innovation and human interaction, i.e. design for the whole podcar city!

Incidentially, David Muyres had issued an inspiring card game,
containing aspects of the comples planning process, which
amused those who got the chance to look at it.

Like at the banquet when Magnus Hunhammar showed
it to some interested participants.

Kjell Dahlström and Hans Lindqvist joined in. All means must be used...
